A new state initiative, the Maine Housing Student Homelessness Prevention Pilot, is helping stabilize housing for vulnerable families in York County by addressing the root causes of student homelessness. Through a partnership between the Biddeford School Department and York County Community Action Corporation (YCCAC), 84 families have already received assistance, funded by a $275,000 allocation to the region. Many families facing housing insecurity are dealing with sudden financial crises—such as job loss, car repairs, or immigration-related disruptions—rather than long-term instability. By focusing on early intervention, the program aims to keep students in safe, consistent living environments, which educators say directly improves attendance, well-being, and academic success.

With limited shelter options in the area, the program fills a critical gap by providing up to $750 per family for expenses like security deposits, rent, utilities, and minor home repairs. Eligible families must meet federal definitions of homelessness and demonstrate the ability to sustain housing long term. Schools play a key role in identifying at-risk students and connecting families to resources, reinforcing their position as a central access point for community support. Beyond housing, the initiative also addresses related needs such as food insecurity, including distributing grocery gift cards through a nonprofit partner. Ultimately, program leaders hope this effort not only prevents homelessness but also helps break the broader cycle of poverty affecting many local families.
