Sixty years ago, eleven community leaders came together to form YCCAC, opening a small office on Main Street in Sanford in January 1966. Within weeks, YCCAC launched its first program, helping residents enroll in what was then a brand new program, Medicare. Staff went from town to town using a donated trailer and working with community members to reach homebound neighbors. That early work set the tone for what would follow – client/patient-focused, community-based services delivered with a practical, can-do approach, and working with partners.
Over the decades, YCCAC has responded to changing local needs through programs such as Head Start, Outreach, Transportation, Housing Navigation, Nasson Health Care, Energy Services, WIC, and many more—standing by the community through both prosperous and difficult times. Last year alone, the agency served nearly 17,000 people, continuing the legacy those original founders began.
Today, our communities faces significant challenges, including lack of affordable housing, difficulty making ends meet, access to health care, and many others. These realities make it clear that meeting today’s needs calls for innovation, creativity, and the courage to take thoughtful risks.
It will also require partnership. No single organization can address these issues alone. The good news is that because of hard work and a collaborative approach, in York County we’re working from a position of strength – with relationships, trust, and know‑how already in place.
If the last 60 years have taught us anything, it’s that when we work together, hope and vision move from an idea to a plan—and from a plan to a result that makes a difference in people’s lives. By continuing to work together, we can carry that vision forward and better serve our community in the years ahead.
