Home Buyer Education Classes provide information about homeownership and prepare individuals and families for the steps in the home-buying process. Participants earn a Certificate of Completion, a requirement for loans by some lenders. Classes are offered as Zoom webinars (live) or online (self-paced). Participants are guided through the next steps in the homebuying process by a HUD Certified Housing Counselor.
Each year, over 200 households who participate in the Homebuyer Education Program go on to purchase a home.
Option 1: Live Webinars (via Zoom). Classes may be taken from any location. (It is best suited for people living in or moving to Maine.)
YCCAC’s 8-hour Homebuyer Education Class is offered monthly and provides honest, accurate information about homeownership. The class will prepare you for the steps in the home- buying process. Topics include:
Are you ready to buy?
Budgeting for homeownership
Building credit
Zero and low down-payment mortgage options
Working with a real estate agent
Home inspections
Insuring your home
Preparing for the closing
Maximizing energy efficiency
Registration fees are $45 per person or $80 per couple. Free pre-purchase counseling is available following the class to help individuals address credit, budgeting and other issues, and develop action plans for purchasing a home.
Option 2: Online Classes (self-paced) eHome America offers a convenient online option for homebuyer education. When you enroll in eHome America, you will have instant access to YCCAC’s Housing Counselor to answer questions and help you take the next steps towards homeownership once you have completed the course. Participants earn a Homebuyer Education Certificate of Completion that may be required to qualify for certain loans.
