Make Someone’s Life Less Taxing!

York County Community Action Seeks Volunteers for Free Tax Preparation Season

The holiday season is an ideal time to think about giving back to your community. Volunteering in the upcoming tax season can be a terrific way to learn new skills and get involved. Since 2002, York County CA$H—Creating Assets, Savings & Hope—at York County Community Action Corporation (YCCAC) has helped more than 5,000 eligible York County residents collect nearly $12 million in federal and state tax refunds at IRS-sponsored VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites throughout York County. York County CA$H is one of nine members of CA$H Maine, a statewide coalition that provides opportunities for hardworking Mainers to build assets and get ahead.

“The Earned Income Tax Credit is considered the largest poverty-reduction program in the U.S., with Census data showing that the credit lifted millions of people above the poverty line in 2012,” shares Meaghan Arzberger, Director of Economic Opportunity at YCCAC. “We could not help working families in York County claim this money without the support of volunteers during tax season.”

Volunteers can help prepare taxes in person—or virtually, at a convenient time for them, after filers upload or drop off their materials. Volunteers receive tax law training and do not need any tax experience to participate. “We provide all the training and tools that a volunteer needs to be successful in helping families file and learn about financial resources in York County. Volunteers just need to have a desire to help,” says Arzberger.

Tax training for volunteers is held virtually and can be done with others, as a group, or self-led. Volunteers completing the Tax Preparer training receive IRS Certification. Interested individuals may contact Theresa Leblanc at (207) 305-4488 or email Theresa.Leblanc@yccac.org.

York County residents interested in receiving free tax help may call the YCCAC tax prep phone line at 207-324-5762 ext. 2718 or toll-free in Maine, 1-800-965-5762 ext. 2718 starting January 10, 2022. Individuals may be eligible for free tax preparation if they qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or participate in any YCCAC income-eligible programs.

CA$H Maine and its members are sponsored by an IRS VITA. York County CA$H is a program of York County Community Action, whose mission is to alleviate the effects of poverty, attack its underlying causes and to promote the dignity and self sufficiency of the people of York County, Maine.
