York County, Maine — Portsmouth Naval Shipyard employees now have a faster, easier, and fully reimbursable way to get to work. Eligible employees using the new “Shipyard Sprinter” transportation service, operating between Sanford, Wells, and the Shipyard, can receive 100% reimbursement through the Department of the Navy’s Transportation Incentive Program (TIP).
Operated by York County Community Action Corporation (YCCAC), the Shipyard Sprinter offers a practical solution to chronic traffic congestion and limited parking at the Shipyard — while saving employees time, money, and stress.
“Now that the Shipyard Sprinter is officially approved for the federal TIP program, there’s no reason not to try it,” said Tom Reinauer, Director of Transportation at YCCAC. “Through TIP, Shipyard employees can receive full reimbursement for using transit instead of driving alone. This service takes the daily parking headache off their plate and makes the commute simpler and more predictable.”
“Shipyard Sprinter” Schedule and Route
The Shipyard Sprinter currently serves the 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. shift, with plans to add service for the 6:30 a.m. shift in the near future.
The route begins at Sanford’s School Street public parking lot (corner of School and Mousam Streets), with stops at Ocean State Job Lot, Lowe’s, and the Wells Transportation Center, before continuing to Kittery and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
How to Sign Up
Getting started is simple:
- Contact the Shipyard TIP Coordinator at ext. 6635, 3551 or email tips_pns.fct@navy.mil.
- Call YCCAC Transportation staff at 207-459-2932 – to let them know you want to enroll and to reserve a seat.
- Download the Token Transit mobile app to purchase a monthly pass or call YCCAC for a paper pass.
YCCAC also offers a one-way fare of $8 for Shipyard employees who want to try out the service or need it temporarily. YCCAC transportation staff are available to assist riders with any questions.
Get Paid to Drive Your Coworkers to Work
Not only can eligible Shipyard employees ride for free through the TIP program, but they can also get paid to drive to work with the Shipyard Sprinter program. YCCAC provides training and compensation to employees who operate Sprinter vehicles — offering an additional earning opportunity while supporting fellow commuters.
