Free Tax Preparation


York County CA$H provides free preparation of basic Federal and State tax returns for those with adjusted gross income below $52,000.  All tax prep services are provided by IRS-certified volunteers.  Volunteers can help determine what special tax credits you might be eligible for, such as Earned-Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and Credit for the Elderly or the Disabled.

What kind of tax forms will this program help me file?

YC CA$H Volunteer Tax Assisters can help you file your Federal and State tax returns, such as your 1040EZ or 1040ME.


Do I need to make an appointment or can I just walk in?

You must make an appointment to have your taxes prepared.  To make an appointment, call Kay Forte at 324-5762, extension 2718.


What is EITC?

EITC, or Earned-Income Tax Credit, is a refundable federal income tax credit for working people with low-to-moderate income.  To qualify for EITC, you must meet certain requirements and file a tax return, even if you do not owe any tax or are not required to file.


How do I know if I qualify for free tax prep or EITC?

YC CA$H’s free tax prep is generally available to people with incomes of less than $52,000.  If you have any questions regarding your eligibility, give us a call at 324-5762, extension 2718.


What documents do I need to bring with me to my appointment?

To have your tax return(s) prepared by one of our volunteers, you will need to bring the following information with you:


  • Proof of identification—picture ID
  • Social Security cards for you, your spouse, and your dependents OR Social Security Number verification letter issued by the Social Security Administration OR Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) assignment letter for you, your spouse, and your dependents
  • Birth dates for you, your spouse, and your dependents
  • Wage and earning statement(s) – Form W2, W-2G, 1099-R, 1099-Misc from all employers
  • Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
  • A copy of last year’s Federal and State returns, if available
  • Proof of bank account routing numbers and account numbers, such as a blank check, if you would like Direct Deposit, and
  • Total paid for daycare, and your daycare provider’s tax identifying number, if applicable.
