Beginning this December, there will be two options in Kennebunk for people who need transportation. Currently, YCCAC provides a “Local Rides” curb-to-curb service every Wednesday for Kennebunk residents needing to travel to Biddeford for medical appointments and shopping. This service will continue. But on Tuesdays, the KITT (Kennebunk In-Town Transportation) will offer an additional day of transportation in town via a flex route, picking people up at centralized stops and dropping off at locations in Kennebunk, such as Hannaford, Shopper’s Village, Downtown and the Library.
“We heard loud and clear from so many of our residents who do not own a car or have access to transportation, that basic trips like shopping for food and picking up medication is a challenge,” said Town Manager Michael Pardue.
Staff in the Community Development Department worked closely with YCCAC Transportation Director Robert Currie, Assistant Transportation Director Dot Morin and Transportation Director at Southern Maine Planning and Development Commission (SMPDC) Tom Reinauer, to create a route that would focus on transporting people without access to any other transportation services as a priority. YCCAC is a Community Action Agency whose mission is to alleviate the effects of poverty, attack its underlying causes, and to promote the dignity and self-sufficiency of the people of York County, Maine. SMPDC works to strengthen local municipal self-government while combining total resources for meeting regional challenges beyond individual capacities, such as transportation.
“Getting people where they need to go is critical to the health and vitality of any community,” said Transportation Director for YCCAC, Robert Currie. “Our Transportation Program promotes independence and self-sufficiency by providing the means for residents to get to work, attend doctor appointments, do errands, and more.”
The Town will closely monitor the new in-town route and its effectiveness over the next several months to determine if any changes or adjustments will need to be made to the stops or the timing. “We are very excited and extremely proud to offer this service to our residents and are invested in the success of this initiative. Our hope is that it is so successful we’re able to add an additional day in the future and serve even more of our community with transportation services,” said Pardue.
The in-town route, which is expected to begin Tuesday, December 3, will be published on the Town’s website once finalized: www.kennebunkmaine.us/Transportation.
